Rainbow Spirit Blanket: Free Crochet Pattern

the curio crafts room crochet baby blanket

The Rainbow Spirit Blanket is a colourful blanket that can easily be adjusted to any size. It is worked double stranded with two yarns that perhaps you wouldn't think to use together. The result is a lovely tweedy effect and a wonderfully soft fabric. Ideal for baby blankets.

Reveal: Rainbow Spirit Blanket with Free Pattern Coming Soon

crochet baby blanket free pattern

Why is it that crocheted blankets always look so good in a natural setting? Taking a picture like this has been on my photography wish list for quite some time and now I've finally made something that I can actually drape over a rickety old gate! Meet the Rainbow Spirit Blanket.

Last week I showed you some work-in-progress pictures of this new design of mine and this week I've already finished it! It's such a quick blanket project with - I think- a very beautiful result. Not only because of the classic spiderweb pattern, which I designed in strips, but also because of the yarn combination: I've used one strand of Scheepjes Catona together with one strand of Scheepjes Spirit.

Free pattern next week
The spiderweb strips allow you to make this blanket any size you'd like and with as many colours as you'd like. I opted for a Rainbow palette and a baby blanket size but in the pattern that I will release here on my blog next week, I'll explain how to adjust it to just any size. So please check back for written instructions and some more photos next weekend.

Rainbow Spirit: Work in Progress on My New Free Crochet Pattern

Last week when I showed you the exciting yarn combination I had chosen for a new free pattern project, I promised to publish some work-in-progress pictures soon. Well, here they are..... Aren't the colours lovely? I've called the design Rainbow Spirit - a combination of Scheepjes Catona in 11 bright rainbow colours plus Scheepjes Spirit yarn* in a neutral shade. You can read more about this yarn in my previous post.

What I did is work with one strand of each yarn together to get very beautiful muted colours and a modern tweed-like effect. I opted for a very classic spider-web pattern that I then designed in such a way that you can work it in strips. This of course means that you can make this item as large or as small as you want it to be. But what is it? I think you can guess but for now I'll just finish it so that I can reveal all next week.

You can expect the pattern in about twee weeks' time. In case you're interested in trying this lovely yarn combination and thinking of making this design even though you haven't seen the final result,  I used 3 balls of Scheepjes Spirit (Shade 303 Eagle) and 11 25g balls of Catona mercerized cotton worked together with a 5mm hook. The previous post lists all the Catona shades I used. Below you'll find information on where you can buy the yarn.

A Surprising Yarn Combo for a New Free Crochet Pattern

scheepjes catona and spirit
It's the start of an extra long weekend and I'm taking the time to organize all of the free crochet patterns I have in store for you. My last free pattern was the Squishy Popcorn Cushion Cover I made using Scheepjes Merino Soft Brush and that was a wile back so it's time for some new exiting free patterns.

New free crochet pattern using two different yarns
The first upcoming free pattern I'd like to tell you a little bit about is for a design in which I'm going to use two different yarns. That's a first for me and I'm really excited about how this combination works. I have teamed up my favourite Scheepjes 100% cotton yarn - Catona of course - with another of Scheepjes' yarns called Spirit. You could say that Spirit is a thinner version of the regular Scheepjes Stone Washed yarn. It has a similar white 'fluff' running through it that gives the yarn some extra volume but the percentages of cotton (56%) and acrylic (44%) are different. It is wonderful to work with and also when using it together with Catona. If you'd like to know how I went about that, please check back next week for some work in progress pictures. For now, I'd like to focus on the colours I'm going to use for this project.

Rainbow colours

Spirit Eagle 303

I've chosen Spirit Eagle to combine with some very bright Catona colours to create a bit of a Rainbow effect. I wanted a very cheerful, easy, fast and original project for summer, something that you can sit outside with without having to check the pattern all the time and that you can finish quickly with a beautiful result. It would make for a lovely gift too! Can you guess what it might be? I hope you'll check back next week to see more!
Royal Orange 189, Yellow Gold 208, Green Yellow 245, Apple Green 389
Cyan 397, Powder Blue 384, Delphinium 113, Colonial Rose 398
Shocking Pink 114, Light Coral 264, Lemon Chiffon 100

To give you an idea of the colour range for both Spirit (13 shades) and Catona (105 shades), I thought I'd also include the full shade cards. If you'd like to know where you can purchase Scheepjes yarn, please scroll down to the bottom of this post for links per country.
