Starting 2 new free designs using my favourite Colour Crafter Velvet colours

Scheepjes colour crafter velvet

This week I'm going to start a new design in my favourite colours. Since I mostly work with sport weight mercerized cotton (Scheepjes Catona), I though it might be nice to work with a completely different yarn this time. I could have made this design in cotton too but I chose Scheepjes Colour Crafter Velvet, which is a DK acrylic yarn, to make it extra soft and cosy. Well, actually, I'll be making two things soft and cosy and I'll share the patterns here soon.

I selected four shades that fit bang into my colour comfort zone. For those of you who have no clue: "peacocky" shades always work for me whatever the design ;-) I won't tell you what designs I have in mind just yet but I can give you two clues: Circles & Squares.

I've already been swatching and taking lots of notes so I think I'll be able to show you some Circles & Squares next week.

A bit more info on Colour Crafter Velvet
Let me give you a little more info on Colour Crafter Velvet because it's not the most well-known Scheepjes yarn and I think it deserves more attention. It's the younger sister of the regular Colour Crafter yarn you may know from the 2016 Scheepjes CAL Last Dance on the Beach. The Velvet version has one main colour with white streaks in different gradations, giving the impression that in these places the colour has weathered a bit so that it looks like faded velvet. It comes in 20 different shades and needless to say, they combine perfectly with regular Colour Crafter.
In YARN book-a-zine issue 4, you'll find a lovely granny square made with Colour Crafter Velvet.

Where to buy Colour Crafter Velvet
Colour Crafter Velvet is available from Wool Warehouse (international shipping) and from LoveKnitting in the US.

Garden Room Tablecloth Kits Available Worldwide

Scheepjes crochet tablecloth kit thecuriocraftsroom.blogspot.com

Scheepjes crochet tablecloth kit thecuriocraftsroom.blogspot.com
As of now, The Garden Room Tablecloth Kits are available worldwide. Below you'll find links to various international retailers that stock the kits.

The Design
I'm so happy that I can finally present the tablecloth that I designed a while ago. My intention was to create something that was completely different from the peacock-inspired designs I usually make so I thought let's step out of my comfort zone and make something big :-) Well, it's turned out quite large (approx. diameter of 124cm/50in) but it still consists of small motifs so in that sense it's not so very different from what I'm used to doing. I just love designing little motifs. The tablecloth consists of 91 circles that are joined together as you go. You can first make all 91 motifs except for the last round and then lay everything out to join in the final round.

The Kit
I used 24 different Maxi Sweet Treat (formally Bonbon) colours randomly. It's really nice to mix and match so many colours. This means of course that the kit also has 24 little 25g-balls! But that's not all. It contains a beautifully printed booklet with the pattern plus a bonus pattern for matching coasters to use up the leftover yarn. You'll have about a 100g left over from a variety of colours so that's enough for a nice stack of coasters (they would also make lovely presents).
As a little extra, there are 5 tablecloth weights in the kit too to prevent the summer breeze from blowing your tablecloth into any cakes or tea you're having.

To summarize, the kit contains:

  • 24 balls of Maxi Sweet Treat (Bonbon)
  • The pattern in an After Party booklet
  • Bonus pattern for matching coasters
  • 5 tablecloth weights

Colourways
The kit comes in two different colourways: Bright and Pastel. Below you'll find pictures of both. The Bright colours makes for a very happy and modern tablecloth whereas the Pastel colours have a more vintage feel with just enough contrast for a modern twist.

PATTERN NOTES
You use the yarn double-stranded throughout: one strand of Catona and one strand of Spirit.
The picots are worked as follows: ch3, slst in third ch from hook.
Each new strip (consisting of 7 rows) is started on the right-hand side of your work.
You can easily adjust the size of the blanket:
Length: simply repeat Rows 1-7 as often as needed.
Width: add a multiple of 12 stitches to the foundation chain.

GAUGE/TENSION
It is critical to get the right gauge/tension otherwise you may not have enough yarn.
One strip is 8 x 69.5cm / 3.2 x 27.8in and one block motif as shown below measures 8cm in height and is 10cm wide.

I used a 5mm hook but I crochet rather tightly. I advice you to make a little swatch to see if gauge/tension are the same as listed here. If not, go down a hook size.

Reveal: Rainbow Spirit Blanket with Free Pattern Coming Soon

crochet baby blanket free pattern

Why is it that crocheted blankets always look so good in a natural setting? Taking a picture like this has been on my photography wish list for quite some time and now I've finally made something that I can actually drape over a rickety old gate! Meet the Rainbow Spirit Blanket.

Last week I showed you some work-in-progress pictures of this new design of mine and this week I've already finished it! It's such a quick blanket project with - I think- a very beautiful result. Not only because of the classic spiderweb pattern, which I designed in strips, but also because of the yarn combination: I've used one strand of Scheepjes Catona together with one strand of Scheepjes Spirit.

Free pattern next week
The spiderweb strips allow you to make this blanket any size you'd like and with as many colours as you'd like. I opted for a Rainbow palette and a baby blanket size but in the pattern that I will release here on my blog next week, I'll explain how to adjust it to just any size. So please check back for written instructions and some more photos next weekend.
